There’s a lot of money to be made with a successful indie title.
Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson recently took to Reddit to answer questions from users, and he revealed that the game has already sold 800,000 copies at a retail price of €9.95 and another 1 million copies at €14.95. That adds up to about €23 million (or about $33 million), and while that’s total revenue, not profit, it’s still a hefty chunk of change.
Persson has used the money to create Mojang, a new development studio in his native Sweden. The studio currently has seven employees, and they’re splitting their time evenly between Minecraft and a new game called Scrolls. Persson adds that he only takes a “normal salary” from the Minecraft proceeds, but even so…who knew that virtual Legos could make a guy so rich?
