Sony’s NGP on track for 2011 North American release

Sony’s NGP on track for 2011 North American release

Last month’s earthquake will not affect the North American launch of Sony’s new handheld.

After SCEA boss Jack Tretton said that the recent disasters in Japan would delay the launch of the NGP, many were worried that we wouldn’t see the console in North America before the end of 2011. However, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian recently attended a Sony industry event and says that those rumors are unfounded. According to Sebastian, Sony has “reconfirmed” that the NGP will be released in North America sometime in 2011 and the report verifies an earlier statement from Sony Japan that refuted Tretton’s original claims.

Sony has not yet disclosed the NGP release details for international regions such as the UK and Europe and the console still does not have a price point, although we’ll likely find out more at this year’s E3 in June.

In other news, Sony has also revealed that the PlayStation Network now has 75 million accounts, a full half of which are from North America. Since the PSN launched in 2006, 1.4 billion pieces of content have been purchased from Sony’s online store.
