China bans time-travel

China bans time-travel 1

Add time-travel to the list of things not allowed in China.

In what can only be described as an odd move, the Chinese government has placed a de facto ban on all TV shows and films that display any sort of time-travel despite the increasing popularity of the genre. The government apparently doesn't like it when anybody else engages in historical revisionism.

“The producers and writers are treating the serious history in a frivolous way, which should by no means be encouraged anymore," reads a statement from the Chinese State Administration for Film and Television. The Administration also says that time travel films “casually make up myths, have monstrous and weird plots, use absurd tactics, and even promote feudalism, superstition, fatalism and reincarnation.”

Of course, the Chinese government has been known to censor anything that it doesn’t like, and history can be sensitive subject matter for a country that likes to control the media. Time-travel is just the latest addition to a list of banned things already includes YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, and it's sad to think that there will be entire generations of children who will have to grow up never knowing Doc, Marty, and the DeLorean.
