Commander Shepard won’t be saving the Earth in 2011.

It looks like the Holiday 2011 release date may have been a bit too ambitious. BioWare and EA have announced that Mass Effect 3 has been delayed until early 2012, so you’re going to have to wait a little longer to find out what happens to Commander Shepard and a crumbling human civilization.

“Today we have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012,” said Producer Casey Hudson in a statement. “The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations. We’ll have more details about specific dates as we get closer to release.”

The news is obviously disappointing to fans of the franchise, but it’s better to learn this now while we still have six months to cushion the blow and E3 should give us a few ways to fill the free time come November.
