The Escapist Suffers Huge Layoffs

It seems Game Trailers isn’t the only long-running games site to be closing doors in 2016. The Escapist has just announced a huge lay-off and their office in Durham has closed.

But the online magazine doesn’t seem like it’s out completely. Defy Media has closed the North Carolina office and is moving to Seattle, Washington. It appears that Joshua Vanderwall, Editor in Chief, will continue to run the site with the remaining staff. At least, according to Janelle Vanderwall.

Many of those that have been laid off and those expressing concern have flocked to Twitter with #RIPEscapist. Not much has been disclosed as of yet and most of what we do know is simply from a gathering of tweets. Joshua has yet to comment on the situation and nothing has been said from Defy Media either.

We’ll stay on this as it develops, but it’s nonetheless sad to see so many displaced writers and creators.

Shouldn’t Gamergate morons be keeping that site alive?

Actually I’m glad after that sham clickbait hitpiece on Star Citizen by that 2 bit hack Lizzy Finnegan who contrary to the claims of The Escapist did not verify their sources (one used a CIG ID card which CIG does not issue to its staff, and she took 2 sources off of Glassdoor and tried to make out it was from one source).Even a journo at Kotaku said it was one of the shoddiest pieces of Journalism he’d ever seen and that’s saying something coming for a Gawker BlogSite.

I’m sure there are some good well intentioned people who have lost their jobs, however maybe this along with the Hulk Hogan trial will be a lesson to Blogs and news sites to start following ethical practices in reporting instead of chasing click bait articles for adcents

oh how incredibly sad! In fact, it’s sad they didn’t shut down this hellhole completely. A sad display of clickbait journalism, Defy should pull the plug.
