PS4 System Software 4.00 to Feature Folders, UI Changes, and More

Sony has been working hard since the PS4 launch to ensure it was updated with everything players would want. Today Sony announced what would be included in system software version 4.00 and what people should be expect from the beta.

John Koller, Vice President, PlayStation Brand Marketing, SCEA took to the PlayStation Blog to outline what would be included in the update. “Our beta for PS4’s upcoming system software 4.00 update, codenamed Shingen, rolls out soon for everyone included in the public beta program. If you signed up and were selected, be on the lookout for an email with instructions on how to download.”

While some changes seem minor, such as the basic UI enhancements in the PS4 system software 4.00 update, many other things have been overhauled to make the UI work better for everyone. For example, the Quick Menu has been fixed up allowing a more streamlined experience. Not only is the Quick Menu now faster, only takes up part of the screen, has a few added features, and you can now customize the items in the menu. This will allow players to remove or add items as you see fit, ensuring it works for your needs.

The Share Menu also received a similar overhaul, where it is now faster and also only takes up part of the screen when pressed. It will also remember the last social network you shared to making it very easy to quickly share multiple screenshots or clips to one network. As an added bonus, the length of Twitter clips has also been boosted from 10 seconds to now a whooping 140 seconds.

Perhaps the biggest addition to PS4 system software 4.00 is folders. Since the launch of the PlayStation 4, this was a feature that many people have been asking Sony to add, myself included. You will now be able to make folders on the PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help you collect your favorite games, or apps, in one place for quick and easy access.

Combine all these updates with an improved Trophy system and enhanced user profiles, and PlayStation 4 System Software 4.00 is looking to be one hefty update. With the beta launching for testers shortly, fans will not have long to wait.
