Indie game publisher Versus Evil announced alongside developer Stoic that Banner Saga 2’s challenging new game “survival mode” has been released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.The newly released mode is to serve as a highly difficult mode in the turn-based strategy game, challenging players to try and survive 40 levels of nonstop combat. Owners of the console edition of Banner Saga 2 can buy the newly released content for $4.99. For $37.99, players will be able to purchase The Banner Saga Complete Pack, a collection of The Banner Saga one and its sequel, now including the Survival Mode DLC.
The Banner Saga is a tactical role-playing game set in a fictional world inspired by Viking mythology. Launching in 2014 for PC and mobile devices, The Banner Saga was to be the first in a projected trilogy of titles. It was released as a single player campaign after the separate free to play online multiplayer release back in 2013. The game was inspired by classic titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Shining Force. The developers, three former BioWare employees aimed to create a mature game in the vein of the hit series, Game of Thrones. Avoiding typical tropes such as following the story of a young hero, The Banner Saga focuses on the journey of the player’s caravan, encouraging the player to make difficult decisions for the group of warriors. The Banner Saga was praised for its varied story, difficult combat system and its fully orchestrated score. In 2016, The Banner Saga was ported to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The Banner Saga 2 released in 2016 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and soon after on IOS and Android devices. The game was met with similar praise as the first, continuing the game’s well-told story while further expanding on the already deep combat system. A PlayStation Vita port was announced sometime last year and is expected to launch in 2017.
