The 2017 Joe Shuster Awards Nominees Unveiled 1

The 2017 Joe Shuster Awards nominations has been announced featuring titles from major publishers and indie comic creators.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the Joe Shuster Awards, they are a prestigious Canadian Awards show that exists to honour and raise awareness towards Canadian content creators, specifically, self-published comics, books, graphic novels and web comic creators. The Joe Shuster awards are named after Canadian artist Joe Shuster (July 10, 194-July 30, 1992) who was renowned for his dynamic and inventive visual style, which set the standard for storytelling in a graphic medium.

The birth of Superman which was co-produced by Shuster and his friend and neighbour Jerry Siegel, is what really set things in motion for the Canadian Comics industry, specifically the absence of the now world famous Caped Crusader on Canadian news stands during World War II, ushered in the creation of unique Canadian comic heroes such as Freelance, Nelvana and Johnny Canuck. The end of World War II abolished these restrictions and the rest was as they say, was History. As Canadians we not only honour the great comic artist with the Joe Shuster Award show, but also get the opportunity to highlight some of the great Canadian talent that contributes to the world of Comics and pop culture.
