PlayStation VR Set To Receive Refreshed Model With HDR Pass-through

PlayStation VR Set To Receive Refreshed Model With HDR Pass-through

Sony is showing no signs of abandoning their PlayStation VR initiative, in-fact, Sony today announced that the PlayStation VR headset is getting an updated redesign.

The new PlayStation VR (model number CUH-ZVR2) will feature integrated stereo headphones, a slimmer connection cable and most importantly: a newer processor unit that supports HDR passthrough, giving users the ability to enjoy HDR content without resorting to disconnecting the processor unit and connecting the PlayStation 4 directly to the TV.

Those unaware of the issue, the original PlayStation VR headset shipped with a processor box that supported an older version of the HDMI standard which meant that it did not support HDR content pass-through. In other words, players would have to disconnect the processor unit for the PSVR or try their luck in purchasing third-party splitters that could support and carry the HDR signal to the TV while the PSVR was still connected.

Sony went on to outline that while the new unit will use a new processing unit, and while the new unit will not be compatible with previous headsets, all PSVR games will be compatible with both PlayStation VR models. There will also be noticeable ways to distinguish between the two models, there will be new packaging. The boxes will also show the new model on the box, depicting the integrated headphones the unit will ship with. If consumers are unsure if they are buying the new models, they should look for the model “CUH-ZVR2” to ensure they have the latest and greatest offering of the PSVR.

No release date or retail availability has been revealed for the refreshed PSVR headset, although Sony has said they will share those details at a later date. Sony has also confirmed that the pricing for the headset will remain the same. Currently, the core PlayStation VR bundle begins at CAD 549.99.
