Nintendo Partners With Illusion Entertainment For Animated Super Mario Film 1

The upcoming animated Super Mario film’s development has officially begun.

Nintendo announced today that the company is teaming up with animation studio Illusion Entertainment to work on the highly anticipated Super Mario movie project. Nintendo also announced that the role of producer will be shared between Nintendo company director Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment founder Chris Meledandri. The film is being funded by both Nintendo and Universal Pictures, with Universal Pictures handling worldwide distribution of the movie.

Owned by Universal Pictures, Illusion Entertainment is bet known for their work on the Despicable Me franchise. Despite receiving mixed reception, The studio’s latest film Despicable Me 3 grossed over $1 billion when it released last year.

The Super Mario animated film is set to be the first in Nintendo’s new initiative to make use of the company’s well-known Intellectual properties. If the film is a success, it could mean that we’ll be seeing more of Nintendo’s famous mascots on the big screen.

“Lastly, we will now introduce a new initiative to effectively use Nintendo IP. We have started development of an animated movie featuring “Super Mario” with Illumination, the movie studio that brought films such as “Despicable Me” and “Minions.” For this project Mr. Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow of Nintendo will co-producing the film. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.” Stated Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima in the latest financial results briefing for fiscal year.

“Further announcements on details such as release dates will be made at a later date. We look forward to providing further information about the release timing for this movie that we hope everyone will enjoy. As a part of our effort to expand Nintendo IP beyond video games, we look forward to bringing smiles to people around the world through this movie.”
