CD Projekt Red doesn’t want to withhold any content from their fans.
CD Projekt Red definitely knows how to win over their audience. The developers of The Witcher 2 have followed in the footsteps of Valve and announced that all future DLC for the new sequel will be free, although you might have to pay for some of the larger expansions.
“Let me announce that all our DLCs will be FREE. All of them,” said the developer during a recent Witcher 2 Facebook Q&A. “If anything will be for purchase, those will be expansion packs.”
The news is pretty straightforward and it’s obviously great for fans – everybody likes free stuff – but it doesn’t seem like a particularly sound business model for the AAA industry. Game developers need to make money if they want to keep making games, and I’d prefer not to listen to entitled people complain when DLC isn’t free just because The Witcher did it. I’m not going to object if CD Projekt wants to give stuff away, but it’s worth remembering that other studios still have the right to charge for content.
