Smash Bros. On 3DS And Wii U Have Different Release Dates

Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed much about the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. Director Masahiro Sakurai hosted the event and began with a huge zinger for Wii U fans. While the 3DS version will come out this summer, Wii U owners will have to wait till winter.

Luckily portable Nintendo fans are in for a treat. All fights will run at 60 fps and only certain assist trophies (which summon characters to help you fight) will run at 30 fps.

The 3DS version and Wii U version will also have different stages from each other. Some of the stages shown include old stages like Halberd and a MegaMan stage that has the Yellow Devil as a mini-boss.

But that’s not all.

Both versions contain full online multiplayer. The two modes shown, For Fun and For Glory, both seem exciting and accessible.

For Fun mode allows players to battle on any stage and will record only your win record. For Glory mode, on the other hand, only allows players to duke it out on the flat stage Final Destination and records both wins and losses.

Each stage features a “Final Destination” setting, which makes every stage have nothing but a flat plane to fight on.

Instead of traditional rankings, the new Super Smash Bros. features a Global Smash Power, which ranks you based on your scores in each stage.

Speaking of each stage, there are some new items that include weapons like a gun from Steel Diver and a fire block from Mario (that works much like the beam sword).

Most exciting were the new fighters announced.

Both Zero Suit Samus and Sheik will be their own individual characters (previously being accessed only through Zelda and Samus). Yoshi has also been confirmed as a returning fighter, appearing in all previous titles.

At the end of the video a trailer was shown featuring Greninja, a Pokémon from X and Y.

Update: Both Greninja and Charizard are confirmed as playable characters.

Move-sets for the new characters were shown but none were as interesting as MegaMan‘s, who uses techniques from all his past games (including Marvel vs. Capcom).

3DS also receives a brand new game mode in Smash Run. For five minutes each individual fighters explores a battlefield gaining power-ups. After the timer is up, everyone will fight each other in a brawl with their newly gained abilities. So far it seems like a great addition and an incentive to check out the portable version.

Be sure to check back to CGM as more details arise (hopefully Ness makes an appearance).
