Steam adds subscription model, Darkfall: Unholy Wars first to use it - 2013-04-26 17:10:57

Valve has added a subscription option to Steam making it possible for publishers to bring across subscription-based MMOs to the popular game client.

The first game to test out this new payment option will be the recently Greenlit indie MMO Darkfall: Unholy Wars. The total cost of entry to this PvP-focused title will be $39.95 with an addition $15 per month because of the subscription.

It will be interesting to see where this new payment option goes in the coming months. There are no shortage of MMOs on the market right now but almost all of the recent ones have had to succumb to the free-to-play model to keep user membership up with Blizzard’s World of Warcraft being the only real subscription-based MMO still remaining successful.

As such, because Steam will make it easier for users to manage subscriptions within the client, this payment option may possibly return subscription-based MMOs to prominence.
