Rockstar enhancing Euphoria engine for Max Payne 3

The next game in the series will be the most immersive yet.

According to Rockstar Vancouver art director Rob Nelson, gamers expect a more fully realized cinematic experience, even if the base mechanics are still the same. Nelson says both the games and the gamers have become more sophisticated.

“You need a lot of custom setups, the environments need to be varied, and all of that while keeping the gameplay fun and responsive,” said Nelson. “People have become really specific about how they want things to be controlled. It’s a lot more work!”

With Max Payne 3, Rockstar is pushing the Euphoria engine that was used for GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption to new heights, and have even tweaked the AI reactions to bullets and environmental impact in order to make the game more immersive.

“Euphoria is really helpful in making those situations feel natural, rather than having Max crash into things and ragdoll. We can make it feel like he’s anticipating an impact before it happens – that’s an exciting thing we’re working on.”

Expect to hear more about Max Payne 3 when the full EDGE preview of the game is released.
