Anonymous has decided that the assault on the PlayStation Network was having unintended consequences for innocent gamers.
The Anonymous hacking collective has been at war with Sony for much of the week, but the group has ceased its attack on the PlayStation Network after realizing that innocent gamers were getting caught in crossfire.
“Anonymous is not attacking the PSN at this time,” said the group in a statement. “Sony’s official position is that the PSN is undergoing maintenance. We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.”
Anonymous claims that their goal is not to harm Sony’s costumers but rather Sony as a corporation.
“Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.”
Attacks on Sony began earlier in the week when Anonymous went after some of Sony’s websites and even a number of Sony executives. The attacks are motivated by Sony’s lawsuit against hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz, and while the assault on the PSN will stop, the war with Sony is not over.
“Our campaign against Sony and others that would trample on the idea of free information will continue until we are satisfied with the outcome.”
For now, however, PSN users can sleep easy knowing that their online gaming will go uninterrupted.
