The BioWare space epic will soon be appearing in a new animated form.

EA has announced that they’re teaming up with anime production house T.O Entertainment and North American anime distributor FUNimation Entertainment to make an anime movie set in the Mass Effect universe.

“Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series. “Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we will bring this rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for.”

EA has not yet shared any plot details for Mass Effect, although this isn’t EA’s first foray into the anime business. There are already films based on Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space, while a movie based on Bioware’s Dragon Age is currently in production and is expected sometime later this year. The Mass Effect anime will receive a digital and home video release in the summer of 2012.
