A new report indicates that Nintendo will knock $50 off the Wii before the end of May.

Citing a “trusted source,” Engadget is reporting that the Nintendo Wii may be getting a price drop as early as May 15th. If true, the asking price is expected to drop a full $50 from the current $199.99 down to $149.99.

Wii sales have slowed significantly in the past few months, so a price drop wouldn’t be particularly surprising. Then again, $50 might not be enough to make a difference. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is currently the only major title on the radar for 2011, and its hard to drum up new sales when everyone (and everyone’s grandmother) already owns a Wii.

In a related story, E3 is happening less than a month after the rumored price drop. Should the story prove accurate, it could mean that Nintendo is getting ready to announce the successor to the Wii.
