The first Portal didn’t even need Steam to go quadruple platinum.

On Tuesday, Valve celebrated the launch of Portal 2 with the news that even after excluding Steam sales, the original Portal had still sold nearly four million units worldwide. The first-person puzzler came packed-in with Half-Life 2 and its two episodic sequels as part of 2007’s The Orange Box, and also had an individual release for the Xbox Live Arcade, where it was titled Portal: Still Alive.

Given the rather ubiquitous “Still Alive” (the tune even made it into Rock Band) and the overabundance of cake jokes, we always knew that a lot of people had played Portal, but four million is still impressive for a short puzzle game with no multiplayer. Portal 2 has a long road ahead of it if it’s hoping to match that number.
