Famous Nickelodeon cartoon characters will take to the diamond with Major League Baseball All-Stars.
2K Play has announced Nicktoons MLB, a game that – just as the title suggests – will combine classic Nickelodeon cartoons with America’s pastime later this summer for the Kinect, Wii and DS.
The press release reveals that characters like “SpongeBob SquarePants, ZIM, Dudley Puppy, Fanboy, Chum Chum, and Ren and Stimpy” will be able to play with and against “players from all 30 MLB teams, including Matt Holliday (St. Louis Cardinals), Andre Ethier (Los Angeles Dodgers), Miguel Cabrera (Detroit Tigers), Jason Heyward (Atlanta Braves), Cliff Lee (Philadelphia Phillies), and Robinson Cano (New York Yankees).”
Different ballparks may directly affect gameplay and fans will be able to play in both real and fictional locations.
As bizarre as the mash-up might seem, Steve Lux, vice president for business development at 2K Play, says that the idea has been talked about in the past.
“The Nicktoons are an animated bunch and it’s no secret they have been petitioning our office to facilitate this unprecedented match up,” said Lux. “Whether an extraterrestrial from Planet Irk, superheroes who wear underwear on the outside of their costumes, or a secret agent dog, time will tell if these heavy hitters have the grit to play in the big leagues.”
“Our Nicktoons stars are taking the field and plan to ‘go yard’ against the best players in Major League Baseball,” adds Shaan Kandawalla, VP of digital games for Nickelodeon. “Nicktoons MLB will introduce a whole new rivalry on the baseball diamond and mark the first time our popular animated characters and MLB’s players will be featured in the same game.”
High Voltage Software (The Conduit) will be developing the Kinect and Wii versions, while Black Lantern Studios will be handling the DS version, which makes sense considering that Black Lantern also made Little League World Series Baseball 2009 for the handheld.
