Sony defends its "Welcome Back" program

The company has responded to the critics of its PSN user retention plan.

Not everyone is happy with the PSN “Welcome Back” program, but don’t expect Sony to cough up anything else. SCEE head of communications Nick Caplin stands by Sony’s offer and took to the EU PlayStation Blog to respond to some of the criticisms being leveled at the company. For instance, many longtime PS3/PSP users may already own the free games being offered, but Caplin insists that they tried to give players the best possible range of options.

“We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles,” Caplin wrote. “The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84 per cent, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone.”

The Sony employee also commented on the free PlayStation Plus content that will disappear unless users opt to continue paying for the service.

“Unfortunately that is the way PS Plus works,” said Caplin. “Look at it as access to a lot of free content for a month, you should have a busy month of gaming.”

It’s been a very quiet month of gaming without the PSN, so that may not be much consolation to some fans. Either way, Sony has made its offer, so we’ll have to wait and see how the community responds.
