Cryptic Studios entering a Perfect World

Cryptic Studios entering a Perfect World

The Chinese MMO publisher Perfect World has acquired the developer of Champions Online.

Atari has found a buyer a mere two weeks after deciding to cut ties with Cryptic Studios. The Chinese MMO publisher Perfect World has agreed to purchase the Champions Online developer for €35 million (50.38 million USD) in the hopes of reaching larger Western audience.

“This strategic acquisition will add attractive game titles to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the US and global online game markets,” said Michael Chi, chairman and chief executive officer of Perfect World. “More importantly, Cryptic Studios’ highly reputable development team and its technology platform will further strengthen our well-established R&D capabilities.”

While Cryptic and Perfect World may have to overcome some geographic and linguistic hurdles, the pairing otherwise makes a lot of sense. Both parties are know how to develop MMOs, and they’re probably hoping things will work out better than they did with Atari.
