Blizzard is known for its franchises. Games such as Diablo II, WarCraft III and StarCraft have shaped a generation. It seems Blizzard is looking to restore them so new generations can enjoy the experiences.
On the Blizzard job directory, there is a new job posting for “Senior Software Engineer, Classic Games.” This listing outlines the descriptions for the position as, “Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.”
They go on to say that “We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.”
This is an exciting prospect, these games helped build Blizzard as it is today. It can not be overstated how important WarCraft III was to the industry, without it, there would be no MOBA genre in general. eSports would be in a very different place than it is now. It is still yet to be seen how Blizzard plans to modernize these titles, but Blizzard has never been known to slack on quality, so I imagine they will be well produced.
