Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo

Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo

Something is rotten in Lime City, and it’s up to a not quite hard-boiled team of detectives to get to the bottom of it.

According to Pokémon Famichudan, Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo is latest game set in the Pokémon universe, available for 3DS in Nintendo Japan’s e-shop. The player controls Tim Goodman, a soft-spoken young man with grand dreams. A run-in with the womanizing, coffee-drinking, electrically-challenged “Great Detective Pikachu” set them both on an investigation into an incident that will show them every side of Lime City, including its seedy underbelly.

While clearly not a main entry into the franchise, like any noir worth a dime, Great Detective Pikachu has personality to spare, without taking itself too seriously. Although usually relegated to monosyllabic repetitions of their own name, the story is told through fully-voiced cut scenes that include Pokémon (Pikachu’s voice, of course, comically deep), promising an insight into their world, quirks, and personalities like never before. The light-hearted plot is propelled forward by carefully investigating scenes and solving puzzles, with quick-time events that utilize the touch screen peppered throughout to spice up the action.

It is on sale in the e-shop for ¥1200 until the end of February, after which it will retail for ¥1500.
