RUMOUR: Sony’s upgraded PS4 may be called NEO

RUMOUR: ,Sony's upgraded PS4 may be called NEO

Rumours and speculation began to fly after Giant Bomb’s Austin Walker made a post last night detailing information about the PS4K which, according to his sources, will be known as NEO.

Adding on to that, Eurogamer issued a statement today stating that the information Giant Bomb received is true. They claim to have access to the same documentation and that Sony is openly sharing it with developers.

The NEO will supposedly feature an upgraded CPU, GPU and improved bandwidth on the RAM. Giant Bomb also claims that starting in October, every PS4 game will be required to ship with a “Base Mode” to run on a standard PS4 and a “NEO mode.” Walker also states that Sony will be trying to keep the player base between the two systems connected. Developers will apparently be prohibited from making any NEO-exclusive features in their games and any improvements made are expected to be graphical and performance-based.

Here’s a comparison between the two:

CPU

Base PS4: Eight Jaguar Cores running at 1.6 GHz

NEO PS4: Eight Jaguar Cores running at 2.1 GHz

GPU

Base PS4: AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz

NEO PS4: Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz

RAM

Base PS4: 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s

NEO PS4: 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

Eurogamer stated that the new GPU almost sounds like one of the new rumoured Radeon graphics chips AMD is currently developing. This could indicate Sony might be making use of AMD’s new Polaris technology.
