Gearbox Gearing Up For Next Borderlands

Gearbox Gearing Up For Next Borderlands 1

During PAX East, you may have seen the Internet set aflame by the “announcement” that Borderlands 3 is in development.

This isn’t entirely true – The next Borderlands game was actually confirmed to be in pre-production last year at PAX South. Despite this, we did get some exciting news about the next installment in the Borderlands series. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford clarified the news via Twitter.

Battleborn Art Director Scott Kester will join the Borderlands team as Art Director, and Mike Neumann, who was part of the team that wrote the original Borderlands, will be writing the next installment.

Neumann has also provided voice acting in previous Borderlands games, including Catch-A-Ride mechanic Scooter. Neumann said he had been brainstorming a new character for the next Borderlands – Scooter’s son, Scooper.

“I did this whole Scooter thing, then I pitch-shifted it up like seven semitones so it sounds like a chipmunk and it was the funniest thing I’d ever heard,” said Neumann. However, Scooper isn’t confirmed yet.

Once Battleborn and its five-part DLC season pass are released, Gearbox will move onto production of the next Borderlands game. In the meantime, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford encourages Battleborn players to hunt for Borderlands Easter eggs scattered throughout the game and its DLC.

“There’s already a lot of Borderlands Easter eggs in Battleborn,” added Pitchford. “But they’re all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put Easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?”

Battleborn Creative Director, Randy Varnell, and Designer, Brian Thomas, plan to sneak Easter eggs regarding the next Borderlands in DLC.

It was also announced that Sergi Brosa will be the main character Concept Artist for the next Borderlands, which appears to be called Borderlands 3:

Although, Randy Pitchford didn’t announce what the next game would be titled.

“It’s no secret, obviously there’s going to be another Borderlands.” Pitchford said during Gearbox’s panel at PAX East. “We don’t even know if we’re going to call it [Borderlands 3]. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know.”

The next Borderlands will be the fourth main installment in the series since the first game premiered in 2009.

In other Borderlands news, Tales From The Borderlands, Telltale Games’ take on the Borderlands universe, will be released as a physical bundle tomorrow. Previously, the game was available digitally as five separate downloadable episodes.
