GOG Announces DRM Conversion Service, GOG Connect

DRM has always been the bane of a PC gamer’s existence. While the effects are minimal at best, there’s always that underlying worry that your games aren’t really yours. So, enter companies like GOG that provide DRM-Free games, and now, the chance to rid some of your Steam titles of that dreaded DRM.

GOG announced a new service called GOG Connect, which allows users to transfer eligible games from their Steam libraries over to their client, GOG Galaxy. In the process, those Steam titles become DRM-Free, and also give players access to GOG exclusive bonuses for those games.

The process works by allowing certain titles a short period to be eligible for the transfer. Unfortunately, it seems that after the time is up, you won’t be able to transfer your games, but GOG promises that more opportunities and more games are on the way as they are in talks with multiple developers. As expected, only one Steam account can be connected to a GOG Galaxy account. While hard saves are easily accessed, unfortunately Steam cloud saves (as well as other Steam services such as friend lists and achievements) do not transfer over.

Right now, about 20 games are eligible for the transfer.
