Sonic Mania: Collector's Edition Revealed, Themed Around Genesis 2

Last month, Sega announced Sonic Mania during their 25th anniversary celebration of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Hearkening back to the glory days of Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, the game was met with critical acclaim during its worldwide reveal. And for good reason: Sonic Mania promises to return to Sonic’s ’90s titles in everything from its gameplay to its art direction and music. For many fans, it’s the perfect new Sonic game. To make it even better for those fans, Sega announced a brand new collector’s package for the most diehard Sonic Mania buyers out there.

According to GameSpot, the Sonic Mania: Collector’s Edition was originally leaked on Amazon before the announcement by Sega. The bundle includes a variety of goodies, such as a Sega cartridge with a golden ring inside, a special metallic collector’s card and a 12 inch statue of the Genesis-era Sonic standing on top of the console. Oh, and if you flip the power switch, you can hear the classic Sega startup sound. Pretty rad.

The Sonic Mania: Collector’s Edition will set you back a bit, however. Priced at $89.99 for Canadian Sonic fans, it’s not exactly the cheapest way to celebrate Sonic’s history. Still, for what’s packaged inside, Sega has thrown together a nice homage. It’s great to see that the company understands how much Sonic fans love Sega’s Genesis years, and are more than happy to indulge that passion through merchandise that honours those first few games.

Sonic Mania is currently planned for a spring 2017 release, with the game arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The Collector’s Edition is available for all three platforms, but is only planned for North America for now. Stay tuned as we move closer to the Sonic Mania release date. We’re sure to find out brand new information about the game over the next few months before game’s launch.
