A line of Super Mario Happy Meal toys will be available in the United States for a short time.Earlier this year, McDonald’s debuted a number of Happy Meal toys based on Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise in Japan and Europe. While there was no mention of the toy line coming to North America originally, Nintendo announced through Twitter that the toys will be available from today until May 22, 2017. The line consists of eight different toys from the Mario universe. These include Mario, invincible Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, a koopa shell and a 1-Up Mushroom. The 1-Up mushroom and invincible Mario were unavailable in the European run of the toys with Europe getting a Piranha Plant and a Question Block an Invincibility Star in their place.
This isn’t the first time Nintendo and McDonalds have teamed up for promotion. In 2014 McDonalds ran a line of Mario Kart Happy Meal toys, advertising the original release of Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. Certain McDonald’s locations also have accessible “Nintendo Zones”, stations where Nintendo consoles can be played for a limited amount of time. McDonald’s partnered with Sega a number of times in the past as well. A line of Sonic the Hedgehog Happy Meal toys were made back in the early 90s. In 2003, a series of LCD handheld games were created based off of the Sonic franchise.
Along with the new Happy Meal toys, McDonald’s is also holding a contest to win a Nintendo Switch prize pack. Using the restaurant’s official app, people can scan any purchase made before May 22, 2017, to be entered into a draw, getting the chance to win a Nintendo Switch and a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. 100 prize packs will be given away for the contents, Details can be found on McDonald’s official site.
