SEGA has announced that Sonic Mania’s Steam release on PC has been delayed until August 29, 2017.
Sonic Mania is set to release on August 15 2017, however SEGA announced on their livestream today, that the highly anticipated throw-back title will be delayed on Steam. SEGA stated that the Steam release of Sonic Mania has been delayed due to the title not performing to the level of quality they want for the game.
It is unclear on how the game is currently performing on PC. SEGA most likely wants the game to achieve parity with the console releases of Sonic Mania. Sonic Mania was first revealed in July of 2016, during the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th anniversary party event held by SEGA in San Diego. Both fan and press reception for the title has been hugely positive, with many claiming it to be a return to the series roots for Sonic the Hedgehog.
SEGA enlisted the help of Christian Whitehead, who had previously worked on ports of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic CD for Android and iOS devices. Whitehead was recruited by SEGA initially for his excellent fan made Sonic the Hedgehog titles. The upcoming release of Sonic Mania also includes a retro-inspired limited edition collector’s release that comes with a 12’’ Sonic statue, a SEGA Genesis/Megadrive replica cart with a gold ring, and a collector’s card with a download voucher for the actual game, all packaged in a nice collector’s edition box.
The delay for Sonic Mania on PC is unfortunate, however if it is indeed to ensure quality and better performance for those who purchase it on PC, then a small delay is more than justifiable. Sonic Mania will release on August 15, 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with the PC version now launching on August 29, 2017 on Steam’s digital storefront.
