DGA Reveals Award Nominees

DGA Reveals Award Nominees 3

The 70th Annual DGA awards has revealed it nominees for the feature film category as well as for the first time director category.

For the theme of first-timers, four of the five films nominated are first-time DGA nominees: Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), Greta Gerwing (Lady Bird), Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missiouri) and Jordan Peele (Get Out).

Christopher Nolan, the director of Dunkirk is the fifth director in the Feature Film race. Nolan is also up for his fourth DGA Award. This is the first of his DGA nominations that also transfers to an Oscar nomination for Best Director, a category that he has yet to win in. Previously his DGA nominations came from, Memento (2000), The Dark Knight (2008) and Inception (2010).

Peele is also up for both categories which makes him the front-runner for First Timer. He is the fourth African American director to be nominated for the DGA honour.

Gerwing’s Lady Bird, while many think it was her first time behind the camera, she had also shared a co-director moment with Joe Swanberg for 2008’s Nights and Weekends. Due to this she is unable to be recognized for the first-timer category.

One of the more notable people who have been snubbed from the DGA is Steven Spielberg for The Post. A film with high expectations but has been missing from key guild awards lists including a shoutout at SAG, WGA and now DGA. I was nominated along 11 others on the PGA list, but it went home empty-handed after six nominations at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Spielberg was last nominated in 2010 for his film, Lincoln.

Two other who were missing from the DGA list were other potential nominees Joe Wright for Darkest Hour and Luca Guadagnino for Call Me By Your Name.

Traditionally the DGA award was always an important way in determining who will go on to win the corresponding directing Oscar. The Winners will be announced February 3 at the Beverly Hilton.
