Shape of Water Takes Best Picture at Oscars 2018 1

In a night shrouded in expectation, Guillermo del Toro, Jordan Peele, Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand came away with the most coveted award in the industry.

Among the night’s big winners, Guillermo del Toro and J. Miles Dale won the Oscar for Best Picture for their movie, Shape of Water. The movie is set in 1962 in a United States secret government laboratory. The lab focuses on developing technology that will help beat the Soviet Union in the Cold War. When the mute janitor Elisa meets an odd looking fish creature, her life is changed forever. This was the fourth nomination for del Toro and his first Oscar.

Other notable winners included Gary Oldman, who won Actor in a Leading Role for the movie, Darkest Hour, Frances McDormand, for Actress in a Leading Role in Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson for Animated Feature Film, Coco, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Music (Original Song) from the movie, Coco, and Jordan Peele for Writing (Original Screenplay), Get Out.

Oscar Host Jimmy Kimmel, opened up the night with a few jokes, addressing last year’s envelope mishap that had presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly named La La Land the Best Picture winner when it was supposed to be Moonlight.

Kimmel also addressed the social movements, Time’s Up and Me Too, and addressed Harvey Weinstein’s expulsion from the Academy’s ranks last year due to the sexual harassment allegations. Several celebrities who attended such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Fonda and Lin-Manuel Miranda wore a pin to show their support against sexual harassment and in support of gun control.

One of the notable performances that night came from Keala Settle’s emotional performance of This is Me from the movie, The Greatest Showman. Settle’sawe-inspiringg musical number was so impactful that she started to break down in the middle of the song. Settle made it through however and she was not singing alone. She was backed by a full chorus and dancers that made Viola Davis dance so hard that part of her dress started to fall off.
