Boss Key Productions has issued a statement on the status of its team-based shooter LawBreakers, letting fans know it is abandoning its previously planned support for the game.
According to the update, LawBreakers “failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner [the studio] had originally planned for and anticipated.” In the meantime, the company will be moving on to a new project, “with fresh creative leaders.” While no concrete information was given on what the next game will be, Boss Key described it as “a passion project that we’re in complete control of,” implying it will be developing and publishing the game independently.
Boss Key says it will not be pivoting LawBreakers into a free-to-play game, saying that such a change “takes publishing planning and resources” to see through.
LawBreakers launched in August of last year on PC and PlayStation 4, and saw a steep decline in players not long after its initial release. As of this writing, the game has an all-time peak concurrent players of 7482 players on Steam, and had only a nine player peak in the last 24 hour period. While no concrete numbers were given, Boss Key confirmed in an interview with GameSpot that the PS4 version of LawBreakers was fairing better than its PC counterpart.
Boss Key Productions was founded in 2014 by ex-Epic Games developer Cliff Bleszinski, who is best known for his work on the Unreal and Gears of War series.
