Nintendo is partnering with San Francisco based- venture firm Scrum Ventures to find new ways to utilize their Nintendo Switch console.
According to Bloomberg, the partnership will involve Scrum Ventures looking for startups, teams within larger companies and university researchers developing tools to improve the Nintendo Switch. Scrum is a relatively new firm and they still have to compile their teams ahead of their pitch to Nintendo in the fall.
In regards to the partnership, Nintendo senior executive officer Ko Shiota said that “We are always exploring ways to evolve entertainment. We look forward to discovering unique technologies that add to the Nintendo Switch experiences through the program managed by Scrum Ventures.”
Utilizing an outside company to find ideas for console improvements is a new direction for Nintendo, as the Japanese based company has primarily worked with established hardware companies on their hardware. However, this concept doesn’t come completely out of the blue as Nintendo has been vocal about creating add-ons for the Nintendo Switch, most notably the Nintendo Labo which is set to release on April 20th.
The Nintendo Switch launched back in March 2017 and has been extremely successful since, selling over 15 million units. It is currently the fastest selling console of all time.
