The King of Kong Found Cheating, Banned From Competitive Gaming 2

Billy Mitchell, the man once referred to as “the King of Kong” for his world-record setting high score in Donkey Kong has been stripped of his title and banned from the world of competitive gaming altogether.

The former world-record holder’s high score was investigated by Twin Galaxies, an organization that specializes in video game related world records. Twin Galaxies found that Mitchell’s high score was achieved through emulation and not actual arcade hardware, which is a stipulation Twin Galaxies imposes when recognizing potential world records.

Billy Mitchell first got recognized through a profile piece on video game pros in a 1982 issue of Life Magazine. Mitchell’s status only grew with 2007’s King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters documentary, which put the spotlight on Mitchell’s rise to fame in the arcade scene against Steve Wiebe.

Thanks to the new findings from Twin Galaxies, the former underdog Wiebe can relish in knowing that his score in Donkey Kong was, in fact, higher than Mitchell’s.

“According to our findings, Steve Wiebe would be the official 1st million point record holder,” wrote a representative of Twin Galaxies in a statement, adding that they will be reaching out to the Guinness Book of World Records regarding the matter.

Unfortunately. both Mitchell and Wiebe’s score has since been beaten by Robbie Lakeman, with a score of 1,141,800 which he achieved in 2014.

This news comes only months after it was found that Todd Rogers, the former video game legend that held the world record in the Atari classic Dragster was also found cheating, which ultimately ended him getting banned in a similar fashion to Mitchell.
