No Man’s Sky’s Next Update Brings Multiplayer

No Man's Sky's Next Update Brings Multiplayer

After years of anticipation, multiplayer is finally making its way to exploration game No Man’s Sky, on July 24, 2018.

Developer Hello Games announced the news via a post on the company’s website and went on to share more information about the upcoming update. Titled Next, the new update is the biggest one to date and will allow players to experience a “full multiplayer experience with your friends.” That experience includes exploring the universe with friends as well as random travellers, and players will be able to help them stay alive, or prey on them to aid in their own survival.

The update brings with it the ability to build team bases, with the ability to construct anything from tiny structures to complex colonies. Players can also partake in space battles, and race exocraft’s along alien terrains, as well as create your own race tracks. While it’s great that the game is finally getting a multiplayer mode, it could very well be a case of too little too late for the title.

Prior to No Man’s Sky’s launch, it was one of the most anticipated game’s in the gaming sphere and a lot of the hype was due to Hello Game’s co-founder, Sean Murray. Murray promised a number of features, but the most significant and most oft-repeated was the ability to interact with online friends. However, when the game did launch, it was not only missing the multiplayer features promised but was also full of bugs.

As a result, a large number of gamers felt ripped off by the finished product which led to the game losing nearly 90 percent of its player base within a month of its launch. While multiplayer is finally coming, there doesn’t seem to be much goodwill left from the gaming community towards No Man’s Sky. That being said, Murray did somewhat acknowledge his role in misrepresenting the game saying that, “something I’ve learned is that I much prefer making games to talking about them. I avoid it as much as I can now.”

No Man’s Sky was originally released on PlayStation 4 and PC back in August 2016. The game recently made its way to Xbox One. It currently sits at a score of 71 on review aggregate site Metacritic and possesses a much lower user score of 4.5/10.
