Sony CEO: The PS4 is at the End of its Life Cycle 1

On this year’s Sony Investor Relations day, CEO John Tsuyoshi Kodera informed that the PlayStation 4 is entering the final phase of its life cycle.

Investor Relations Day was held in Tokyo, and Takashi Mochizuki attended the meeting and shared some notes on his Twitter.

The problem is in the growth of the PlayStation Vue, PlayStation VR and its mobile company ForwardWorks. While in 2016, the PlayStation Vue reached its lowest dip and has since been improving, Sony still plans to improve its long-term profitability and increase engagement.

“We will put in more effort into the continuous engagement with the users,” Kodera said.

While PlayStation VR also continues to sell, it is doing less than what was predicted, prompting Sony to aim for a more realistic outlook for the device.

ForwardWorks has had development and release delays, and they plan to make improvements in terms of the company’s operation to make it more efficient.

“It has been a big year of learning for ForwardWorks. It’s difficult to start brand-new IPs, not limited to ForwardWorks and PlayStation,” Kodera said.

“We will continue using pre-existing PlayStation IP as the core of establishment for ForwardWorks, but we’d like to do so while managing the size of new IPs. We’ll continue pushing forward using personnel with knowledge on this point,” he said.

Beyond 2018, Sony plans to put more effort into the development and the enhancement of exclusive titles. Kodera says up until March 2021, it will be a period for a breather in preparation for what’s next in store for PlayStation.
