Hearthstone: The Boomsday Project Reveals the Science Behind the Expansion

Hearthstone: The Boomsday Project Reveals the Science Behind the Expansion 1

Blizzard just released a new behind-the-scenes video for Hearthstone’s Boomsday Project expansion.

The Boomsday Project began with brainstorming a bunch of wild ideas. This time, science was the chosen theme, which had the team discuss early iterations of what the coolest part of that subject would be. Inevitably, the new Hearthstone expansion had to include Dr. Boom, Mad Genius as a legendary card himself.

Up next was the meeting phase, where the design team worked with the effects artists to figure out what kind of explosions The Boomsday Project will have. They also worked together with the sound artists and the engineering team to make all the action happen.

Peter Whalen, the Senior Initial Designer, then revealed how the Hearthstone team, too, used the scientific method when creating the new expansion. “We have a bunch of experiments, we have hypotheses for what cards are going to do, what decks are going to go in, and then we ship them live and try them out with all of our players,” Whalen said.

Hearthstone’s Boomsday Project made sure all aspects of real and fantasy science were covered as well highlighted with cards that represent rocket science, astronomy, biology, meteorology, soul energy, cloning, and, of course, mechs.

While players duke it out in this month’s Hearthstone ranked play with the shiny, new cards, they can also be anticipating The Puzzle Labs, an upcoming single-player experience. After August 21, players can check out the content and get three card packs after logging in.
