Ethan Peck to Portray Spock in Star Trek: Discovery

A younger take on the legendary character

Ethan Peck to Portray Spock in Star Trek: Discovery 2

Spock will finally be making an appearance on Star Trek: Discovery, the latest television show based on the legendary franchise. The roll has been given to Ethan Peck (In Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice).

Spock’s appearance in Discovery is a big deal, as for many, the half Vulcan, half Human science officer has been the face behind the expansive series. First appearing in the original Star Trek television program in 1966, portrayed by the late Leonard Nimoy and later, Zachary Quinto (Heroes, American Horror Story) in the newer films. The beloved character brought with him diversity, intelligence and charisma that helped not only set Spock apart from traditional depictions of an authoritative figure but help cement Star Trek as a forward-thinking and inclusive program.

As Star Trek: Discovery takes place prior to the original series within the timeline, Ethan Peck’s portrayal of Spock will be a much younger take on the character, opening up opportunities to explore a side of the character that has rarely gotten screen time.

In an exchange with the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alex Kurtzman stated, “We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion and yearning,” before adding,

“Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.”

Star Trek: Discovery is available to view as part of CBS’s All Access streaming service. The renowned series will be making its return sometime in 2019.
