Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender Series Coming to Netflix

Aang, Katara and Sokka will once again set forth for adventure in the form of an all-new, live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series.

Netflix announced the series today in a tweet and stressed that the new version will be loyal to its animated roots. The series is billed as a reimagined version of the award-winning animated show, with Avatar co-creators Michael Di Martino and Brian Kinietzko on board as showrunners and executive producers. The duo released a statement on the upcoming show and made it clear that it will feature the diversity and charm of the animated series.

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender,’” said Konietzko and DiMartino. “We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the adventures of a young boy named Aang, who together with his friends must save the world from the destructive force of the fire nation, and their warmongering. The show originally ran for three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, and was nominated for an Emmy, alongside a number of other award wins.

This is the first Avatar live-action project since the much-maligned M.Night Shyamalan film that was released in 2010. The film failed to capture a new audience and was generally dismissed by fans for its whitewashing and overall sombre mood. The movie was planned to be the first in a trilogy, but the backlash mixed with an underwhelming box office run shut those plans down.

Avatar: The Last Airbender will enter production in 2019 and while there has been no specific casting information as of yet, that will surely change in the coming months. In the meantime, fans of the series can look forward to the upcoming slate of graphic novels, set in the Avatar Universe.
