This week the first instalment in DC Comics new mature Black Label imprint was released in the form of Batman: Damned #1, and the book has already produced a fair bit of controversy.
The issue features a full frontal view of Batman’s penis, and this marks the first time in the character’s publishing history that he has been shown fully nude. Fan reaction to the issue has been high, with many people taking to Twitter and posting jokes and various puns involving the contents of the book.
However, since the title was released yesterday, DC Comics has already announced that they will be pulling the plug on the Bat-nudity. While the first run of the issue will be fully uncensored, all future printings and collections will not feature any nudity, and the digital versions will follow suit. It’s not clear if the fan reaction played a part in the companies decision but a person familiar with the situation told IGN that the penis was removed because it wasn’t “additive to the story.”
DC Comics’ Black Label imprint was announced back in March and was billed as a place for top creators to tell mature stories featuring the companies most iconic heroes. Similarly to the company’s Elseworlds line, all of the stories are not tied to regular comics continuity, and as a result, writers and artists have more freedom to tell the stories that they want. The next issue of Batman: Damned is scheduled to hit comic store shelves on November 21st.
