Tokyo Game Show 2018: Sony Announces The End Of The PlayStation Vita 2

Sony has just announced that they will stop manufacturing the PlayStation Vita in Japan after 2019.

At Tokyo Game Show 2018, the company’s senior vice president, Hiroyuki Oda, also said they are not planning to release a successor.

“Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device,” he said, according to Gematsu’s translation. “In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end.”

However, it is unclear if he either meant Japan or worldwide in terms of shipping.

Oda also said at Tokyo Game Show 2018 that there will be differences between Japan and the west in terms of the 20 preloaded games for the recently announced PlayStation Classic.

The PlayStation Classic is a miniature console that looks much like the original PlayStation. This includes the button layout, controllers, and outer box packaging. It is 45 per cent smaller on the sides, however, and is 80 per cent smaller in volume compared to the original. Some of the pre-loaded games include Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash!, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, and even Wild Arms.

“PlayStation Classic is a perfect fit for anyone including the current PlayStation fans as well as nostalgic fans that enjoyed playing the original PlayStation and gamers new to PlayStation who want to experience classic PlayStation games from the 1990s,” Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. stated in yesterday’s announcement.

The new device will be available in limited quantities starting December 3 in North America, Japan, and Europe at $99 MSRP.
