Comics Legend Stan Lee Passes Away at Age 95 1

Stan Lee, the mastermind behind Marvel Comics and famous characters such as Spider-Man and Iron Man, has passed away at age 95.

Lee died early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., with his daughter J.C. at his side. His death marks the end of a tumultuous couple of years for Lee, that included the death of his wife, Joan, and reports of elder abuse as well as theft directed at several of his former employees. J.C. said in a statement that her late father was passionate about his creations, and was thankful to all the fans who supported him over the years.

“He felt an obligation to his fans to keep creating. He loved his life and he loved what he did for a living. His family loved him and his fans loved him. He was irreplaceable. My father loved all of his fans. He was the greatest, most decent man.”

Stan Lee’s real name was Stanley Martin Lieber, and he was born on December 28th, 1922 in New York City. Lee was the son of two Romanian-born, Jewish immigrants and even from a young age, he had a noticeable love for writing. He broke into the comic book industry in 1939 as an assistant, regularly filling inkwells and erasing pencil lines for artists as well as proofreading scripts. By the time he was 19, Lee was the interim editor at Marvel Comics, and within a few years he was writing the majority their major titles.

Lee’s impact on the comic world is one that cannot be understated as he had a hand in creating practically all of Marvel’s most well-known characters, including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-Man. All of those characters have gone on to have adventures outside of the comic book pages, with some at the centre of various TV shows, and others in the massively successful Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For many, Lee was a shining reminder of the power of comics, both as a visually captivating medium and as a place where adventure and intrigue flow constantly. He will be sorely missed and in the words of Balder the Brave: “until we meet again, may the blessings of Asgard be showered upon you!”

Excelsior to you, Mr Lee.
