Sony Accidentally Reveals PS4 Player Counts 1

If there is one thing gaming is known for, it is the need to quantify how your favorite game is doing over another. As 2019 comes fast approaching, many have developed the itch to know how they’ve performed through their 2018 gaming sessions. In what seems like an unintended accident, Sony may have just revealed that information, and much more.

It may not come as a surprise to many that Sony recently implemented a new program called My PS4 Life, an app that shows gamer’s playing history, containing information such as the rarity of the trophies they’ve obtained, hours played and other private statistics.

The problem arose more specifically through the trophy rarity system, where My PS4 Life tells the player exactly what percentage of a game’s overall community has earned that very same trophy. With that info, some have taken it upon their hands to do the math and calculate just exactly how popular some titles are.

As seen on this Reddit thread, the calculations are as simple as multiplication and division, “Here, 33,764 players earned the ‘Photo Bomber’ trophy in Fallout 76, and on PlayStation.com it’s revealed that 8.3 percent of all players got this trophy. Simple math: the total number of people who have played Fallout 76 on PS4= 33.764 X 100 percent/ 8.3 percent = 406,795.” a quote obtained by comicbook.com indicates.

Through this mundane trick, players have quickly been able to calculate what the most popular PS4 title is: GTA V, with 51.7 million players. The uses of this statistics come important, specially to investors, who are especially keen on knowing exactly how widespread the product they’ve invested in is.

My PS4 Life is currently available for all PlayStation 4 users, but as not all players sync their trophy lists, or even connect the system to an internet connection, the numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt. Sony has yet to comment on the situation or numbers, and will update the story should things change.
