EVO 2019’s Surprising Finals’ Order Released

Didn’t See That Coming

EVO 2019’s Surprising Finals’ Order Released 1

This morning, EVO tournament organizer Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar sent out a tweet that revealed the game order for EVO 2019’s finals.

The schedule for this year is unlike that of any other. The smaller games (and Mortal Kombat 11) coming on Friday and Saturday were known beforehand, and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle was assumed to have the first Sunday slot. However, the question on everyone’s minds was the order of Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Tekken 7 on Sunday. Traditionally, Street Fighter always went last. However, with Ultimate doing so well this year and so many other factors being different or wholly new, that tradition was no longer certain.

And as it turns out people’s theories of another game going last were correct – but with an extra game wedged between SFV and its former spot! After BlazBlue, the order of Sunday finals will be SFV, Tekken 7, and then Smash. This is an entirely revised vision for how EVO will play out, and it might be for the better. Players have long complained about Sunday finals running on for far too long, forcing Street Fighter fans to stay up until the next day to catch their game of interest. This way, Street Fighter V will be in a prime place for people to view and then leave if nothing else interests them (as there isn’t much crossover between the Smash community and the FGC at large).

EVO 2019 has been promised to have a variety of big reveals this year, so you can bet we’ll be covering them when they happen. Here’s to fighting games, and I’ll see you in a couple weeks with more!
