At their fall showcase, Apple unveiled three new iPhone models, along with an all-new triple camera system.
Starting with the iPhone 11, Apple focused on camera improvements as well as general upgrades from last year’s model. The iPhone 11 features a 5.1 inch liquid retina display, complete with a new A13 chip that is the fastest ever in a smartphone. Camera wise, the standard camera (26mm f/1.8) now comes with Night Mode that allows for better photos in low light situations, and there is now an Ultra Wide camera (13mm f/2.4) that captures a 120 degree field of view, the widest yet on an iPhone. That being said, the iPhone 11 does not feature the new triple camera system that the pro models have. Along with the camera improvements the iPhone 11 is waterproof in up to two meters for 30 minutes and its battery lasts an hour longer than last year’s model, which makes for an all day battery life. The iPhone 11 retails for $699 USD .
On the more premium front, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature an all new triple camera system, along with up to five more hours of battery. The standard and ultra wide cameras have the same specs as the iPhone 11 but the telephoto and portrait lens camera (52mm f/2.0) is exclusive to the pro model. With the cameras you can take three different shots from the same vantage point, and Night Mode is also included. Apple also showed off a new Deep Fusion feature that uses machine learning to take a better, richer picture. The feature takes nine photos per shot and the devices neural engine then analyzes all of the photos, taking the best parts of each one, before combining them into the final image. Apple’s Phil Schiller called the new feature “computational photography mad science,” before taking viewers through some examples of it in action.
Video wise, all three cameras can shoot in 4K at 60 FPS and Apple showed off a video of the cameras in action. On the battery front, the 11 Pro will have up to four more hours of battery, compared to last year’s iPhone XR and the Pro Max will have up to five more hours. For the first time ever, the Pro models come with a fast charge 18 watt adapter included in the box as well. Lastly, the new iPhones come in a variety of different colours, including midnight green, space gray, silver and gold.
The iPhone 11 Pro retails for $999 USD with the Pro Plus clocking in at $1099 USD. Apple also announced that the iPhone 10R and iPhone 8 will continue to be made and will see their prices dropped to $599 USD and $459 USD respectively. The new iPhones are available to pre-order on Friday September, 13th at 5AM PT and will ship beginning on September 20th.
