Larian Studios, creators of the Divinity RPG series, announced Baldur’s Gate 3; A long-awaited sequel based on the Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms universe.
Revealed at PAX East 2020, the Balsur’s Gate 3 goes into a “next-generation turn-based RPG” with an open-world setting players can explore with “unprecedented freedom.”
The sequel was actually teased last month, in a short trailer showing off the logo and actors providing motion-capture performances.
Its first official trailer showed a five-minute opening cinematic which throws players back into the Dungeons and Dragons world with a literal roar.
In true Dungeons & Dragons fashion, the studio’s press release states players can also assemble a team to navigate through the Forgotten Realms together and use their abilities to fight “devils, deities and sinister otherworldly forces.”
Across the game, players are faced with story choices and a dialogue tree, as their character becomes possessed by a Mind Flayer bug and goes in search of a cure.
At the start, players can customize their adventurer in “15 D&D races & subraces and 8 classes with more to be announced.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 will have four-player online co-op for an optional experience from the single player mode. Players can even bring a buddy with two player split-screen co-op.
Having extra players along also helps in exploring “hundreds of locations” with over 100 hours of story and extra quests.
It’s also a rare major installment for the Baldur’s Gate series since the first PC game was released in 1998 by Bioware. The original game saw an expansion release a year later before Baldur’s Gate II came out.
After its Dark Alliance spin-offs were produced until 2004, the series took a long break until 2012.
This is when the first two Baldur’s Gate games were remastered for current-generation systems in 2012 and 2013 by Overhaul Games.
Siege of Dragonspear was later made in 2016 as an expansion for the first remastered game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has no set release date yet and is coming on PC and Google Stadia (until further announcement).
