Taika Waititi to Direct a Feature Star Wars Film for Disney

Academy Award winning director and actor Taika Waititi (JoJo Rabbit, Thor: Love & Thunder) is set to write and direct a brand new Star Wars film for Disney+.

In a release from Disney, Waititi was announced to be the latest to helm a franchise project after voicing IG-11 in Season One of The Mandalorian. He is also tapped to be a showrunner for a “new untitled Star Wars series” for Disney’s own streaming service.

The film is also some of the few in Lucasfilm’s pipeline following the release of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. The main series is taking a break, but its expansion towards web shows, books and video games are apparent with Waititi’s latest opportunities to add new canon material.

Another Star Wars series is also being made by Leslye Headland, an Emmy-nominated writer who helped pen Russian Doll and Bachelorette. She will also be serving as an executive producer and showrunner for a show set to debut on Disney+ in the future.

The show also fits itself with other confirmed releases, including the next season for The Mandalorian and a Rogue One spinoff series based on Rebel spy Cassian Andor. Another anticipated series focuses on Obi Wan Kenobi after the events of Episode III and stars Ewan McGregor who agreed to reprise the role after his cameos in the sequel trilogies.

It’s still unknown what and when the series will be existing as while the announcements were made as part of Star Wars‘ own holiday for May the Fourth.
