Mafia Trilogy Remasters a Familiar Crime Saga for Consoles

Mafia Trilogy was revealed to be the latest project by 2K Games and Hangar 13, adding a high-definition coat of paint over the open world third-person shooter set in the 1930s to 1960s.

A teaser showed off some of the new graphics engine that would give Mafia, Mafia II and Mafia III an overhaul while keeping the core gameplay intact for major systems. It’s also the first time both the original Mafia and its sequel are available for current generation systems with their DLC. The Mafia Trilogy starts in the 1930s, with players becoming the member of a crime family as they rise through the ranks. Its character, Tommy Angelo, later makes an appearance with others to connect later titles. New protagonist Vito Scaletta later brings Mafia II into across the 40s and 50s against multiple gangs.

Development for the game was rare, as Illision Softworks and Gathering of Developers created the original Mafia in 2002. It later came back with a sequel in 2010 after 2K took ownership over the label and was published in house by their own developers for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Six years later, Mafia III was released as the debut title for 2K’s own Hangar 13 studio. It became the last Mafia release until the game’s Twitter account was resurrected to tease Mafia Trilogy.

Mafia III realized the original game’s scope and gave players customization over their character and war veteran Lincoln Clay. It also included a bigger open world which could set itself apart from the more streamlined approach to Mafia and Mafia II. But players will be going back into a traditional setting at the fictional Empire Bay, under a compelling story and fun third-person action. As with all remasters, 2K and Hangar 13 are likely to make some patches to the first two games while adding tighter controls seen in Mafia III. The driving and shooting mechanics were also ahead of their time with incredibly responsive cover controls.

A Microsoft Store listing for Mafia II: Definitive Edition states the remastered trilogy could be launched shortly after the reveal.
