The sequel for smash murder-mystery game Among Us is being scrapped in favour of supporting the original game, because it’s that popular among streamers and friends.
Its sequel, previously confirmed by devs InnerSloth are now on lock and key. A blog post later explained the interest in the first Among Us encouraged its team to continue working on it. Though simple (and just under 60mb), the game became somewhat of an addiction for current gamers as they band together to find a killer in their space station crew.
Through objectives, players also have to keep their spaceship together while one of them can navigate through vents and murder as an impostor. The game is also silent, encouraging players to stay quiet until an emergency meeting to eject a suspect.
In an announcement, InnerSloth stated the first Among Us was going to be replaced by its sequel due to outdated code.
“The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content,” the team wrote, adding it’s a setback the team is open to working past. “However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level.”
The team promised there would be a continuous flow of new content coming into Among Us, including new servers, colorblind support and an in-game friend system.
One of the biggest additions comes with a new map entirely, with different layouts and objectives to follow. This would give the impostor a new hunting ground while other crew members race to complete objectives with each other. Though not shown yet, InnerSloth teased the new map would be a “Henry Stickmin themed location.”
Among Us is available on Steam and free-to-play over iOS and Android phones.
