Jamie Foxx’s role as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 isn’t over with Sony’s series. He is set to come back as the haunted, high-voltage villain in Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man movie in the MCU.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources claimed Foxx is in final talks between Sony and Marvel Studios to fight Spidey in his third (and possibly last) installment after Far From Home. The movie will be directed by Jon Watts, with Foxx’s character crossing over or being reinvented. But it’s also suggested this is the same Electro from TASM2, as Sony begins to bring in some connections between their world and Marvel’s. This was shown with Sony’s Morbius trailer featuring Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes/Vulture from Spiderman Homecoming.
Foxx won’t be facing off against Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man this time around and fans might see a more satisfying rematch under Watt’s direction and the familiar MCU flavour. It’s still unclear how Electro would fit into the MCU, as we last saw him vaporized following a CGI-heavy fight in TASM2. The villain would also make things complicated for Peter Parker, whose superhero identity was exposed by J. Jonah Jameson (also played by J.K. Simmons from the original Raimi films by Sony).
Sony and Marvel have been tugging at the Spider-Man property for years, with the biggest agreement coming from debuting the hero in Captain America Civil War and MCU continuity. This ran separate from the wall-crawler’s earliest live action films produced by Sony in Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man, sparking some slight confusion among fans. Further complicating it were agreements over character uses and where Spidey could be. This most notably includes only being able to feature Spider-Man DLC in the PlayStation versions of Marvel’s Avengers.
But fans would have to wait and see if Foxx’s role would be official, and if it squares up to the less-than-expected success of TASM2 which featured too many villains. Critics also called the film out for setting up his return with the Sinister Six, though some of its plot elements could make their way into Tom Holland’s script.
